lateral split »

Lateral (from Latin lateralis, meaning "to the side") refers to the sides of an animal, as in "left lateral" and "right lateral"(<--from the Wikipedia entry under anatomical terms of location) and this version of the splits are executed by extending one leg forward of, and the other leg to the rear of the torso...these splits require hyper-extension of the iliofemoral ligament, otherwise the majority of the range of motion must come from the front hip joint.(<--from the Wikipedia entry under split)
