handcuffs »

A modern restraint device that locks a person's wrists closely together. The most common design consists of two parts that are locked together by a short chain, but solid bar and hinged designs also exist.

Handcuffs differ from manacles in that the latter has a shackle-like design with sturdier braces and sometimes a longer chain. Manacles are often depicted as being made of a dark metal like iron, whereas handcuffs are made of clear steel. Manacles are also used as leg restraints while handcuffs are mostly used for hand restraint.
