nose hatchet »

Known as the tonbi-nata (トンビ鉈), tomari-nata (泊鉈), or echuu-nata (越中鉈), these cleaver-like hatchets are general purpose bush knives suitable for hacking down shrubs and small trees. The hooked end is not sharpened, and protects the corner of the blade from strikes against stones, as well as letting the user easily rake fallen branches toward themselves. It is an uncommon adaptation (found mainly in Gifu prefecture?)

The blades are often curved forward, optimizing them for severing, like a khukri. Despite this, and their intimidating appearance, they are considered tools, not weapons.
