I wonder if it is possible to get an endless loop like in electroplankton...

1178. I don't think endless loops are possible, because eventually the corner pieces will be turned around to face the edges even in perfect play, at which point they basically will be in a stable configuration. The same will happen with the pieces congruent to it, and so on and so forth.

After getting all the pieces to face the same direction, I pulled of a decent 1178 myself.
