Actually "any" and some of the others are new additions from a few weeks ago as cheeky FrenchCoffee well knows as he was the one who suggested it.

Editing the Japanese translation of a tag creates a pending translation which needs to be approved, in much the same way as with aliases and so on. It should give you a notice to this effect.

The English version is supposed to be functionally identical to the tag "name" so that is not ordinarily editable.

The pending translation index is currently accessible to contributors and approvable by moderators:

We'd like to open this up a bit further really, but as the number of users with the requisite interest and Japanese ability is low this has not happened yet.

You can also create translations from the "in place" tag editing if you have access to this as a contributor - we restricted this to contributors as it was apparent it was confusing to most users.

If anyone wants to help with any of this, let us know as tag translations are a big priority. I believe a wiki article explaining the guidelines is in place already.

Man1 and Alaktorn, as you know we can pretty freely add new tag types, and the main obstacle is in terms of them making sense, being obvious to users, and having enough users able to maintain them properly to make them worthwhile.

Having seen some of the other schemes, short of making it excessively fine it is going to be hard to maintain a clean distinction between "works," "franchises" and "producers," if those cover what is being lumped together under the term "copyright."

A distinction between "artist" and "circle" seems too subtle to maintain, and a "meme" type might be a little ambiguous as even in the examples given there are some which are clearly closer to copyrights than anything else, and amidst the general tags there are many which could cause confusion.

A "format" or "medium" tag type seems a definite possibility (you may have seen moe's "fault" tag type) - graphite, watercolor, game_cg, dakimakura, wide_image, wallpaper, etc?

Leon previously suggested we have the likes of wallpaper, photoshop, nude_filter and so on in "meta" but this seemed clearly overreaching.

We also need to make sure people are actually going to go through and change them to an appreciable degree - easy in the case of a few big tags like "meta" but dealing with the "copyright" tag would be a bigger job and it might be better to have them lumped together than to have them inconsistently applied because few people looked at the smaller tags.
