Sankaku Channel/Tag translations - タグ翻訳募集中!

We'd like to encourage more user-submitted tag translations, so with this in mind we've been refining the tag translation system and enabling access to all users.

Anyone inclined to help out can now do so easily (saving the language requirements):

• 1. Tags can be searched in any combination of Japanese and English using the "language" specification in the tags index:

• 2. As yet untranslated tags in need of Japanese translations can be similarly identified:

• 3. Translations can be added directly from the tag index by filling and submitting the Japanese tag field:

This will create a pending translation which needs to be approved so there is no danger of overwriting translations with incorrect versions or of abuse.

For the time being the old "name_en" field has been retired in favour of tags strictly having a canonical English "name" with a Japanese translation field.

• 4. Similarly, the inline tag editor (accessed from the sidebar "edit mode") allows translations to be easily submitted to pages of interest. Where present the existing Japanese (or English, when viewed from the Japanese site) tag name will be shown as a tooltip.

• 5. The pending translations awaiting approval are now accessible publicly (approvals are still conducted solely by moderators to ensure consistency, although more public voting and reversion will likely be introduced later):

I would go for the easy ones first. Post 3441005 is/was a good example. The artists name, Hiyo Yuzuna (柚子奈ひよ), may be found in the lower right corner of the image.

You can actually find 90% of them easily by typing the hiragana into Google and checking the suggested conversion and results are appropriate.

Google IME also converts a significant number of them right off the bat.

Hmm, I tried submitting a translation for a tag, but my translation doesn’t appear in the Tag Translations page.

Should be fixed. They were not displaying but were recorded fine.

I have submitted a few more but they should be reviewed. 'Carnelian' and 'Peach-Pit' is particular. Should I use the Japanese Wikipedia article titles or something else?

You picked some rather difficult examples there!

For officially English-styled "Japanese" names, you should submit translations as full-width text only to preserve everyone's sanity. You can use mixed case and full width spaces that way too.

Including mixed katakana/English names in a Japanese version rather defeats the purpose of having them "translated" so it should be avoided too.

Although you can submit non-unique translations, they cannot be approved as they conflict with existing tags - so submitting "carnelian" as a translation is in direct conflict with the tag's original name. The translation has to be unique, once it is in place no other tag can use that string.

For "peach-pit" the official Japanese styling would be "PEACH-PIT", which we would probably include as "ＰＥＡＣＨ－ＰＩＴ"

Also, I don't know if "carnelian" is a clean tag to begin with, it may be a bit messy in there already.

The tag translations view has been updated with a more advanced search system, along with several tens of thousands of translation candidates.

Question: should we have a full-width space before subtitles within ～ symbol things or not? I’ve noticed I haven’t been consistent in my translations, but they were all approved anyway. Edit: I noticed another inconsistency, the numbers. Some are full-width, some are not. The above 妻５人 etc. has full-width 5s, but the translation “極限脱出　9時間9人9の扉” has normal 9s. I took the latter from Wikipedia, and the 妻５人 etc. one from VNDB. I think the best solution would be if the channel treated 5 and ５ as the same character, so that whichever is fine, also because I think I’ve seen them used interchangeably on Japanese websites.

As a Japanese speaker, I think the spaced version is slightly easier to read and nicer to look at, but I'm not sure which is strictly correct as it is non-standard punctuation anyway. I would recommend spacing if discretion allows. They would mostly appear on a new line or in a different typeface.

Most new numbers are full width, older ones were frequently not. At some point the older numbers may be mass-converted over to full-width. I think we'll leave it open to users to decide for the time being, whilst telling them to use all full-width alphanumerics in the Japanese version of the tag.

I don't think they can be easily substituted for one another in the database though, so going all full-width may be necessary at some point to deal with things like autosuggest and tag name searches.

OK, I remade the translation with a full-width space.

I’ll leave the numbers alone as you said they’ll later be automatically converted. Will keep in mind to use full-width in the future.

What happens if someone adds a translation for a tag, which is pending for approval. And someone else just edits the tag type? Does the system remembers the previously suggested translation?

Multiple translations of one tag in either pending or approved state can exist. Only one will be active (on approval of tag translation the system copies the translation into the tag) and it must be a unique string. It is not possible to approve a tag which doesn't satisfy these conditions in the first place.

Tag type edits should not affect translations. It should only do anything in the event of a change to the translation (which would trigger a pending translation).

Long story behind this, but may I request to

• Delete my suggested translation for kobayakawa_shiho
• Move 小早川詩帆 from kobayakawa_shiho to kobayakawa_shiho_(mote_sugite_shuraba_na_ore)
• Give 小早川志保 to kobayakawa_shiho_(wrestle_angels)

Thanks for your thoroughness, this was done.

As the volume of translations grows we'll look at adding more management options accessible to users (like deleting your own unapproved translation proposals).

This 楠葉舞 should be the translation of this kuzuha_mai_(the_god_of_death), but since they exist separately I can’t add it as a translation.

It seems like the Japanese version of the site is a bit buggy (check above post for another bug).

Would need a Japanese user to make a good go at it.

That bug with the ratings is now fixed, he was quite right about it not recognising the rating (the text values in the edit form were returning Japanese values which the server could not recognise as valid ratings so it defaulted to "q"). Nice find to all concerned.

Could you be more specific about the history not working? Which history, where, when doing what?

For example click the link above, go into Jap mode, click History: I’m pretty sure that’s the English-side history, not the Jap-side.

Please be a bit more specific as we have 4-5 different histories over the site... I think you mean the wiki history, in which case it is working normally I believe. You need to edit a Japanese language version of a page for it to record and display the edit in the appropriate langauge.

Thanks. That is intended - you would be editing the English version of the page in the Japanese interface in that case.

I’m not sure I understand, are you saying that the page isn’t actually separate between Eng and Jap? It actually is.

Is there an example of the problem with a page with an actual Japanese version?

I couldn’t find any wiki pages in Japanese, but if you check the previously linked pages side-by-side you can see a difference under the “Copyright” section between them.

I don't suppose anyone would be able to take on the task of checking the new seasons for missing copyright and character translations?

It seems some always slip though... I had some success using the Japanese Wikipedia's season listings to keep up to date with translations but it is likely better something handled by users.

This isn’t about tag translation, but post translation. Was curious to know if anyone knew what やりきれる means, especially in the instance of Post #3580364.

I get the feeling that it means something like “can you do it on your own?” but not in the sense of masturbation, but rather of molesting the woman. As in, the woman doesn’t want to get involved in the sex, so she asks if the boy can satisfy himself without bothering her too much (maybe because she’s cooking?). But I have no idea if that’s the right interpretation (and I’m not sure I’d be able to put it into English, either).

Edit: yeah I think I’m right, on the Pixiv page the artist made up a longer conversation between them and the mother basically says that.
